What is brake?

brake machining

Glossary “brake machining” Definition:
A procedure of turning a drum or a rotor on special lathe to remove surface imperfections such as scoring, and to eliminate runout and other dimensional problems.

brake moan

Glossary “brake moan” Definition:
A low pich noise that is felt in the floor and/or the steering wheel during light brake application.. Common vehicle speed range between 8 and 40 mph.

brake hose

Glossary “brake hose” Definition:
A flexible tubular conduit for the transmission of fluid pressure in the brake system. Designed to allow for suspension travel.

brake light switch

Glossary “brake light switch” Definition:
An electrical switch, operated either mechanically or hydraulically when the brakes are applied, that causes the brake lights to light up.

brake feel

Glossary “brake feel” Definition:
A term relating to the driver’s ability to determine the amount of braking force exerted or required during a stop.

brake fluid

Glossary “brake fluid” Definition:
A specially formulated liquid used to transmit brake pedal pressure from the master cylinder to the wheel cylinders. The proper type of fluid must be used in the system that it was designed for.

brake flushing

Glossary “brake flushing” Definition:
The removal of fluid from a brake system, washing out sediment by flushing with denatured alcohol or clean brake fluid, and refilling the system with fresh brake fluid.

brake grab

Glossary “brake grab” Definition:
The sudden increase in the braking of a wheel, often caused by a contaminated lining due to a leaking wheel cylinder, or worn of binding components .

brake hop

Glossary “brake hop” Definition:
Condition that occurs when the swing-arm length of the rear suspension is too short, causing the rear wheels to repeatedly leave the ground during braking.

brake drag

Glossary “brake drag” Definition:
A light, but constant, contact of the brake shoes or pads with the drum or rotor, resulting in early failure due to excessive heat.

brake fade

Glossary “brake fade” Definition:
Condition whereby repeated severe application of the brakes, over a short time period, cause an expansion of the brake drum and/or loss of frictional ability, which results in impaired braking efficiency. When every brake shoe are wet, they lose braking ability. Off gassing from the pads can also cause this condition. If the brake fluid is overheated and becomes vaporized, this condition will also occur.
