Glossary “brake chamber” Definition:
A unit in which a diaphragm converts pressure to mechanical force for actuation of a brake.

Glossary “brake control valve” Definition:
A unit that sends a signal to the computer when the brakes are being applied.

Glossary “brake cylinder” Definition:
That part in which a piston converts pressure to mechanical force for actuation of the brake shoes.

Glossary “brake disc” Definition:
The parallel-faced, circular, rotational member of a brake, acted upon by the friction material of the pads.

Glossary “brake disc minimum thickness” Definition:
Term used to indicate disc minimum thickness.

Glossary “brake dive” Definition:
Term used for dive in the front end when the brakes are applied and a high rate of deceleration is occurring.

Glossary “brake bleeding” Definition:
Procedure for removing air from lines of a hydraulic brake system.

Glossary “brake anchor” Definition:
Pivot pin that is mounted on the brake backing plate, against which the brake shoe(s) are held, as to not rotate in the direction of the drum when the brakes are applied.

Glossary “brake assembly” Definition:
An assembly of the components of a brake system, including its mechanism for the application of friction forces.

Glossary “brake band” Definition:
A round, flat metal band with a friction surface on its inner diameter; used primarily in parking brake systems, but can also refer to the band used in A/T.

Glossary “brake bias” Definition:
An excessive brake force at either end of the vehicle causing the brakes at that tend to lock before the other end, often leading to loss of control.

Glossary “brake bleeder” Definition:
Hollow threaded components that allows the system to be opened for the purpose of bleeding or flushing the system. Located at the wheel cylinders, calipers, or accumulator. Also refers to a piece of equipment that supplies brake fluid under pressure that is used to bleed or flush the brake system.

Glossary “brake actuator” Definition:
Unit that converts hydraulic pressure, air pressure, vacuum, electrical current, or another form of energy into a force that applies a brake.
