Glossary “engine thermostat” Definition:
Temperature sensitive mechanical device found at the coolant outlet of an engine that expands (opens) or contracts (closes) to control the amount of coolant allowed to leave the engine, based on its temperature.

Glossary “engine torque” Definition:
A rotating, twisting action developed by the engine that is measured in pounds, feet, or kilowatt hours.

Glossary “engine tuneup” Definition:
Inspection, testing, and adjusting of an engine; the replacement of any parts required to ensure maximum performance.

Glossary “engine vibration” Definition:
Any vibration caused by the rotating components of the engine or the related accessories. Engine vibration can occur at any vehicle speed.

Glossary “engine sling” Definition:
Cable or chain used with an engine hoist.

Glossary “engine thermal switch” Definition:
Electrical switch designed to delay the operation of a system in cool weather to allow time for the engine coolant to warm up.

Paint specially formulated to withstand engine heat.

To perform an extensive engine repair including machining, re-boring, and honing to factory-stock specifications.

Created when any engine componet or accessory that rotates is out of balace or has excessive runout.

Device used to support the engine-transmission assembly when the cradle must be unbolted or removed.

Glossary “engine identification number (EIN)” Definition:
Code to identify the type of engine, can be stamped on the cylinder block or head. Paper tag may be affixed to the valve cover.

Glossary “engine idle compensator” Definition:
Thermostatically controlled device on the carburetor that prevents stalling during prolonged periods of idle, during hot weather, while the air conditioner is operating.

Glossary “Engine EAR” Definition:
Trade name of an electronic noise detection device. Consists of an earphone head-set, adjustable amplifier and a noise sensor. It is primarily used to isolate engine noises, vacuum leaks (noise), body squeaks, and rattles.
