Glossary “crankshaft seal” Definition:
1). A rubber-like seal around an engine crankshaft to prevent the leakage of oil. 2). A rubber-like and/or ceramic seal surrounding the compressor crankshaft to prevent the leakage of oil and/or refrigerant.

Glossary “crankshaft throw” Definition:
One crankpin with two webs.

Glossary “crankshaft main journal” Definition:
That part of the crankshaft, ground round and polished smooth, around which the closely fitted main bearings surround the journals and support the crankshaft.

Glossary “crankshaft oil passage” Definition:
Holes drilled through the crankshaft to permit oil to flow from the main bearings to the connecting-rod bearings.

Glossary “Crankshaft Position Sensor” Definition:
Mounted immediately in front of the cylinder block and aligned with the crankshaft pulse ring: relays the actual position of the crankshaft to the PCM. May also be found at the rear of the crankshaft, using special slotted vane disk that is mounted to the flex plate. Some use a special flywheel that provides the signals to the sensor.

Glossary “crankshaft pulley” Definition:
A pulley fitting on the front of the crankshaft.

Glossary “crankshaft end-play” Definition:
Specified crankshaft endwise motion controlled by side flanges on one of the main bearings.

Glossary “crankshaft gear” Definition:
Gear or sprocket found on the front end of the crankshaft that is used, directly or indirectly, to drive the camshaft.

Glossary “crankshaft arm” Definition:
Connector between the two rod journals and the main bearing on the crankshaft.
