Glossary “rear suspension” Definition:
An integral part of the total suspension system designed to keep the rear axle and wheels in their proper position under the car body, typically of two types; solid axle type and independent rear-suspension type.

rear spoiler

Glossary “rear spoiler” Definition:
A part that mounts to the truck lid to alter the airstream at the rear of the body to increase down force. This helps rear wheel traction at highway speeds.

rear shelf

Glossary “rear shelf” Definition:
Thin panel behind the rear seat and in front of the back glass. It often has opening for rear stereo speakers. Also known as rear package tray.

rear engine

Glossary “rear engine” Definition:
Engine arrangement where the engine is placed behind the rear wheels, driving them through the transaxle assembly.

Twisting reaction of a rear-axle assembly in a direction opposite to that of wheel rotation when power is applied, controlled by the control arms in coil-spring models and by the leaf springs in leaf spring models.

rear control arm

Glossary “rear control arm” Definition:
Horizontal arms that connect the rear axle housing to the frame when coil springs are used in the rear suspension system to maintain axle alignment and handle the driving and torque loads.

rear axle housing

Glossary “rear axle housing” Definition:
Basic framework of the rear-axle assembly inside which the individual parts, including the differential and axles are mounted and/or operate.
