Glossary “neutral junction” Definition:
The center connection to which the common ends or a Y-type stator winding are connected.
n
net valve lift
Glossary “net valve lift” Definition:
The lift, less the running clearance, of a valve. The actual amount the valve lifts off the seat. It is slightly less than gross lift because of the deflection of the pushrods, rocker arms, and the flex in the camshaft itself during loaded operation.
net horsepower
Glossary “net horsepower” Definition:
Maximum engine horsepower as measured on a dynamometer.
net torque
Glossary “net torque” Definition:
Maximum engine torque as measured on a dyno.
negative wheel slip
Glossary “negative wheel slip” Definition:
Wheel lockup that occurs when too much braking force is applied to a wheel and the tire skids on the pavement. ABS controls negative wheel slip by modulating the hydraulic pressure to the wheel or wheels that is/are skidding.
nematic
Glossary “nematic” Definition:
Describes a fluid that is a liquid crystal with a threadlike form. It has light slots that can be rearranged by applying small amounts of voltage.
neoprene
Glossary “neoprene” Definition:
Type of synthetic rubber that is resistant to heat, light, oil, and oxidation.
nerf bars
Glossary “nerf bars” Definition:
Small, tubular bumpers at the front and rear of a car.
net brake horsepower
Glossary “net brake horsepower” Definition:
Flywheel horsepower of a fully equipped engine, with all accessories in operation, measured on a dynamometer.
negative pole
Glossary “negative pole” Definition:
Negative terminal on a battery. Also known as negative post.
negative post
Glossary “negative post” Definition:
Same as negative pole.
negative pressure test
Glossary “negative pressure test” Definition:
Part of the respirator fit test. Performed by placing the palms of both hands over the filter cartridges and inhaling. A good fit is evident if the face piece collapes onto your face due to a good seal.
negative temperature coefficients (NTC)
Glossary “negative temperature coefficients (NTC)” Definition:
The ability of a substance to change its characteristic opposite for a given change in temperature. Type of thermister in which the resistance decreases as the temperature increases.
negative terminal
Glossary “negative terminal” Definition:
The side of a battery or electrical device nearest ground potential, often identified by a minus (-) sign.
negative ion
Glossary “negative ion” Definition:
Any atom or group of atoms that have more electrons than protons.
negative offset
Glossary “negative offset” Definition:
A wheel rim that has been placed inward from the center of its mounting flange.
negative coefficient thermister
Glossary “negative coefficient thermister” Definition:
Resistance will lower as the coolant temperature increases.
negative back pressure EGR
Glossary “negative back pressure EGR” Definition:
EGR system having a normally closed bleed hole which opens when back pressure increases, closing a diaphram valve and allowing engine vacuum to raise the pintal valve off the seat.
negative back pressure EGR valve
Glossary “negative back pressure EGR valve” Definition:
EGR valve having a normally closed bleed hole which opens when back pressure drops, reducing vacuum above the diaphragm and cutting off the recirculation flow.
negative camber
Glossary “negative camber” Definition:
The inward vertical tilt of the wheel(s), when viewed from the front of a vehicle.
