Glossary “tetraethyl lead (TEL)” Definition:
A chemical, Pb, once added to gasoline to increase its octane and aid in lubrication of the valves. Lead damages catalytic converters and oxygen sensors and therefore cannot be used in vehicles designed to operate on unleaded fuel. Leaded gasoline is no longer sold in the United States.

Controlled procedure, used by the NHTSA to perform laboratory tests for temperature-resistance testing of automotive tires as determined by how long the tire lasts on the test wheel. The ratings are A, B, or C, with an A rating having the best temperature resistance.
